"The Duality of Human Innovation: Balancing the Possibilities and Consequences of Technology"

 


Technology has brought countless benefits and advancements to society, but it has also led to unintended consequences that have disrupted our lives and raised ethical concerns. A common trope in literature and pop culture is the narrative of creations taking on a life of their own and becoming uncontrollable by their creators, capturing the duality of the endless possibilities of human innovation and the fear of unintended consequences.

One example of unintended consequences is the spread of disinformation through social media platforms. While these platforms may not have intended for such consequences, they have contributed to the problem of fake news and misinformation that is gripping the world. It is therefore important for humans to maintain agency and control over technology, including its impact on society, the workforce, and daily lives.

In a 2017 Pew Research survey, more Americans expressed worry than enthusiasm about the increased role of automation in various aspects of life, including self-driving vehicles, robot caretakers for older adults, and a future of machines performing jobs previously filled by humans. A 2019 survey from Pew found that nearly twice as many Americans believe automation has done more harm than good.

As a professor specializing in the field of automation, I believe in its benefits and the important role my community must play in communicating those benefits to the general public. However, it is not just a matter of science communication. Engineers and scientists have the responsibility of deliberately considering the intentions and implications of the technologies they develop. Universities, including my own, can play a role in fostering this way of thinking by offering technology ethics courses for engineers.

But what do we do when technology goes awry? While we can't predict the future, we can still assess how new technologies are applied and accepted into society and make adjustments as necessary. The concept of a feedback control system, which involves collecting system measurements and adjusting actions based on those measurements, can be applied to the deployment and use of new technologies. The "sense and respond" approach, which involves continually collecting and analyzing data on the impact and use of a technology, can also be used to address unintended consequences and make necessary adjustments.

Governments, organizations, and individuals all have a role to play in addressing the duality of human innovation and unintended consequences. Governments can regulate and monitor the development and use of technology to mitigate negative consequences. Organizations can establish internal guidelines and processes for responsible technology use. Individuals can educate themselves about the technologies they use and advocate for responsible development and use. It is important to have diverse perspectives and voices involved in decision-making related to technology to ensure a balance of viewpoints.

Collaboration and communication between different sectors, including academia, industry, and government, can also help address unintended consequences and promote responsible technology use. There is a need for ongoing dialogue and discussion about the role of technology in society and how to balance its benefits with the potential for negative consequences.

In considering the implications of new technologies, it is important to consider the potential long-term impact, as well as the potential for them to exacerbate existing inequalities or create new ones. Ethical considerations should also be integrated into the design and development process of new technologies. The field of artificial intelligence poses unique challenges and considerations related to unintended consequences.

The impact of automation on the workforce is also a significant consideration. Steps should be taken to address potential negative consequences, such as job loss, and to ensure that the benefits of automation are shared fairly. Privacy, security, democracy, social connections, and the environment are all areas that can be impacted by technology and should be considered in its development and use.
